CENTRAL OREGON MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION of AMERICA

(COMOAA)

Never Stop Serving

Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is the nation’s largest and most influential association of military officers. It is an independent, nonprofit, politically nonpartisan organization. It is dedicated to a strong national defense and to preserving the earned entitlements for members of the uniformed services, their families and survivors. MOAA expertly represents our interests with Congress and the administration and is the leading voice on compensation and benefit matters for all members of the military community and their families.

With over 360,000 members from every branch of service-including active duty, National Guard, Reserve, retired, former officers and their families; it is a powerful force speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of our nations military service members currently serving, prior service and retired. MOAA members greatly assist in this process by making their voices heard in advocacy in action activities (AIA) and using the MOAA Take Action Center.

Membership in MOAA is not a prerequisite for membership in COMOAA. However, members are strongly encouraged to join.

JUNIOR RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS (JROTC) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Central Military Officers Association of America  (COMOAA) scholarship program began in 1995 with the primary purpose of recognizing the achievements of graduating JROTC students who are planning on attending a Service Academy, college, or vocational school. Currently, the program includes four high schools with JROTC and Cadet Corps programs including Crook County (Prineville), La Pine, Mountain View (Bend) and Redmond.

Since 1995, eighty-two students have received more than 150,000 in scholarship award money.  82% of these students have used this money at an Oregon school.

In February each year, the scholarship process is announced, using the school JROTC instructors as the point of contact for application, distribution and endorsement of JROTC participation. The Scholarship Committee reviews applications and conducts in-person interviews. The COMOAA scholarships are awarded in honor of Robert D. Maxwell, Oregon’s own Medal of Honor recipient, and Lieutenant Colonel David Blahnik, USA (Ret), a long-serving scholarship committee member. Other scholarship money is awarded based on available funds. There is no eligibility requirement for recipients to affiliate with the military. Award recipients are announced at senior graduation events and presented by a COMOAA member.

Over the years, the scholarship program has been supported by contributions from various sources.  The program has received money from a local business supporting military organizations, member estates, a member’s book sales, 50/50 drawings at monthly COMOAA meetings, and donations from many regular and surviving spouse members.

Donations from members and the public are always welcome. Donation money ensures program viablility for future generations.
